Google's driverless cars designed to exceed speed limit

By Joe Miller Technology Reporter Google has tested its technology in modified cars    Google's self-driving cars are programmed to exceed speed limits by up to 10mph (16km/h), according to the project's lead software engineer. Dmitri Dolgov told Reuters that when surrounding vehicles were breaking the speed limit, going more slowly could actually present a danger, and the Google car would accelerate to keep up. Google's driverless prototypes have been widely tested on roads in the US. The UK will allow driverless cars on public roads from 2015. Google first announced its driverless car division in 2010, and has been testing its technology in modified cars built by other manufacturers. The cars have travelled on more than 700,000 miles of open road, mostly in California. In May, the US tech firm said it would start building its own self-driving cars.

At least 191,369 people have been killed in Syria's conflict through April, more than double the figure documented a year ago and probably still an under-estimate, the United Nations human rights office said on Friday. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said. "With additional killings reported from earlier periods, in addition to the new killings that have taken place, the total is more than double the number documented a year ago," Pillay said in a statement. "Nevertheless, as the report explains, tragically it is probably an underestimate of the real total number of people killed during the first three years of this murderous conflict." An additional 51,953 killings that were reported lacked sufficient information and were excluded from th

In effect, the organization is not seeking to halt the epidemic this year. More than 1,300 people have already died this year from the virus in the worst ever outbreak and WHO has faced criticism, including from medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), that it has done too little too late to fight the disease. “WHO is working on an Ebola road map document, it’s really an operational document how to fight Ebola,” Reuters quoted WHO spokeswoman, Fadela Chaib as saying to reporters Friday, “It details the strategy for WHO and health partners for six to nine months to come,” she said.
