Chairmen of boards of health parastatals in Nigeria on Wednesday held an emergency meeting to fashion out ways of solving the lingering strike by resident doctors in public hospitals.

Austine Akibundu, Chairman Forum of health Parastatals
After five hours of deliberations, the chairmen set up another committee to interface between the minister of health, Onyebuchi Chukwu and the Nigerian medical association alongside allied professional bodies. This is aimed at reconciling the differences and bringing about an enduring solution to the crisis in the Nation’s Health Institutions.
Austine Akibundu, Chairman Forum of health Parastatals said, “The meeting therefore called for us to proffer immediate solutions to cushion the effect of this action on the citizens of this great nation who are faced with health challenges. The need to get our hospital working optimally cannot be over emphasised especially in the phase of the trend to lives posed by the Ebola epidemic that has already distorted socio economic and political lives of Nigeria.
The intervention of the chairmen of boards of public health institutions is coming days after the federal government ordered the suspension of residency training of doctors in federal health institutions across the nation.
The move followed the deadlock in negotiations with striking doctors of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA.
