Sport: Falconets storm Montreal, ready for Sunday final

High flying Nigeria U-20 Women team, the Falconets have stormed Montreal ahead of their final match against Germany tomorrow.
Having left Moncton after their 6-2 whitewash of the Democratic Republic of Korea in their semi final match played on Wednesday, the girls seem set for the ultimate battle and are confident that the Germans would fall.
According to Elizabeth Carr, the team’s media officer, the Nigerian delegation are currently staying at Sheraton Hotels Montreal with all the players in high spirits. “All our players are in good condition with no injury worries. The girls had two training sessions today as part of preparations for the finals,” she said.
Nigeria defeated Korea Republic 2-1, England 2-1 and drew 1-1 with Mexico in the group stage. They thrashed New Zealand 4-1 in the quarter finals to proceed to the semi finals where they edged out Democratic Peoples Republic of korea 6-2 to advance to the finals.
Nigeria and Germany met four years ago in Germany and lost 2-0 to the Germans.
Nigeria’s 6-2 defeat of Korea DPR was the biggest win ever in the semi-finals of the competition and saw their attacking spearhead Asisat Oshoala become only the third player to score four goals in a match in the history of the competition. The rampaging Nigerians have made a habit of scoring early and then overwhelming their rivals with their strength and speed, a winning formula they will be out to repeat against the Germans.
The Germans on the other hand led by Maren Meinert’s have remained a formidable unit, however, and have barely put a foot wrong at Canada 2014. Making the most of their opportunities in front of goal, they saw off a strong France side in the last four and now have their sights set on repeating their 2010 final feat on home soil, one that saw them lift the U-20 Women’s World Cup trophy for a second time.

UK varsities on alert as intakes arrive from Nigeria, others

WHO Universities in the UK have been put on alert to be ready for a potential outbreak of the Ebola virus when the new term starts in September. Universities UK, the umbrella body that represents vice-chancellors, has written to every university giving detailed guidance on how to deal with an outbreak. The decision was made to send out the guidance because universities are expecting thousands of new students to arrive from West Africa. While the three countries which have seen the largest number of Ebola cases – Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone – have hardly any students enrolling at UK universities, Nigeria – which has had confirmed cases – is the fourth largest supplier of international students to UK universities. In 2012-13, the latest year for which figures are available, a total of 9,630 were enrolled. A spokesman for Universities UK said: “The issue is very much on universities’ radars. We circulated to universities the publicly available guida...
