Ahead of the 2015 general elections, South East Ndigbo Lagos has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to seek reelection to enable him complete his programmes.
Speaking in Lagos yesterday during a courtesy visit to the corporate headquarters of The Sun Publishing Limited, the group’s President, Mr. Leonard Ogbonnia, in a speech read by the secretary, Chief Ringo Okeke, said President Jonathan had recorded several achievements in various sectors of the economy, in spite of the many distractions, hence the need for him to continue in office beyond 2015.
His word: “In 2010, we requested Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to come out and contest the 2011 presidential election. He obliged us and contested and we supported him overwhelmingly and he won. During the campaigns, he promised Nigerians a holistically transformed Nigeria, which he encapsulated in his transformation agenda. After the overwhelming victory, he hit the ground running. We are calling on him to contest the 2015 presidential election so that he can finish what he started.”
South East Ndigbo Lagos said it would be a great injustice to the president and the South-South geo-political zone if Jonathan is not allowed to do a second term of four years, noting that any further attempt to frustrate him or force him out of the 2015 presidential election would not augur well for the country.
The group stated that while each of the other geopolitical zones, apart from the South East, had ruled the country for more than 12 years, South South, where President Jonathan hails from, would have ruled the country for only five years by May 2015 and therefore it will be “a monumental and perhaps, irredeemable injustice and marginalisation if Jonathan and South South are denied a second term of four years.” The president stated that the group was currently going round markets to educate and sensitise businessmen and women to register during the voter registration exercise, so that they could vote during the 2015 general elections.
In his comments, another member of the group, Nze Basil Osuokwu, while describing Igbo as the only ethnic group that truly believes in a united Nigeria, said the group was not supportive of the call for South East natives outside Igboland to return home. He said they should remain where they are and defend their investments.
Welcoming members of the group, the Editor, Daily Sun, Mr. Onuoha Ukeh, thanked the group for the visit and stated that the company was pleased with Igbo traders in Lagos for their patronage.
He urged them to continue to patronise the newspapers, as it is currently the most widely circulated newspapers in the country.
